Scientists discover 'Pinocchio' dinosaur

The long-nosed Pinocchio rex is believed to be part of the same family as Tyrannosaurus rex.
With an elongated head filled with razor-sharp teeth this late Cretaceous predator would have been no less of an effective killing machine than its more famous cousin. Both species were thought to have lived alongside one another around 66 million years ago.

Scoperto "Pinocchio rex", dinosauro dal muso allungato

Un gruppo di scienziati dell'Università di Edimburgo, in Scozia, ha scoperto una nuova specie di tirannosauro caratterizzato da un muso allungato e che per questo è stato soprannominato Pinocchio rex.

La ricerca è stata pubblicata sulla rivista Nature Communications. Il dinosauro, che appartiene alla famiglia del T. rex, viveva sulla Terra 66 milioni di anni fa, durante il tardo Cretaceo, e si trovava soprattutto in Asia.

'Byzantine iPad' Found in Ancient Shipwreck

Turkish archaeologists excavating a harbor site on the European side of the Bosphorus have unearthed a 1,200-year-old wooden object which they claim is the ancient equivalent of a tablet computer. The device was a notebook and tool — in one.
The Byzantine invention was found within the remains of one of the 37 ships unearthed in the Yenikapi area of Istanbul, a site which has been at the center of excavations for the past 10 years.

Tree of Life, Bahrain: A Miraculous Survival in the Desert

Puente del Inca in Argentina is one of the most remarkable natural wonders. It is a natural stone bridge over the River Caves, situated 2,720 m above the sea level in Mendoza. Researchers suppose that in ancient times ice covered the river, and the ice sheet formed a support for snow, dust and rocks that fell from the nearby mountains in avalanches.. The Selkies

Selkie is simply the Orcadian dialect word for "seal".
So, selkies are a very common sight across Orkney. Heads bobbing above the waves, they are often seen by the shore, watching inquisitively with uncannily human eyes.
To the onshore observer it is not hard to see how the legends surrounding the selkie-folk — the seal people — sprang into life.
Orkney has many tales concerning this shape-shifting race.

Ancient times table hidden in Chinese bamboo strips

The 2,300-year-old matrix is the world's oldest decimal multiplication table.
From a few fragments out of a collection of 23-century-old bamboo strips, historians have pieced together what they say is the world's oldest example of a multiplication table in base 10.
Five years ago, Tsinghua University in Beijing received a donation of nearly 2,500 bamboo strips. Muddy, smelly and teeming with mould, the strips probably originated from the illegal excavation of a tomb, and the donor had purchased them at a Hong Kong market. Researchers at Tsinghua carbon-dated the materials to around 305 bc, during the Warring States period before the unification of China.

Da una collezione di strisce di bambù di 23 secoli fa, gli storici hanno ricomposto quello che ritengono essere il più antico esempio al mondo di una tabellina su base 10.

Cinque anni fa, l’Università Tsinghua di Pechino aveva ricevuto una donazione di quasi 2.500 strisce di bambù. Infangate e puzzolenti, le strisce probabilmente provenivano dallo scavo illegale di una tomba, e il donatore le aveva comprate in un mercato di Hong Kong. Gli scienziati cinesi le avevano poi datate al radiocarbonio intorno al 305 a.C., durante il periodo dei Regni combattenti, prima dell’unificazione della Cina.
